It's finally, finally here!! If you're new to the fertility awareness world, you may not know that Kindara originally launched pre-orders for Wink in the summer of 2014--almost two full years ago! For anyone who was an early supporter (guilty as charged!), this was a long time to wait for such an exciting idea to come to fruition. But the wait is finally over and I've got my hot little hands on the Wink at last.
You don't have to use Wink to use FAM. Any oral/vaginal thermometer that runs to the 10th degree accurately will work. So why would you drop $129 on a thermometer? Because Wink was made specifically with FAM charters in mind and has some truly drool-worthy features that make it any FAM lover's dream.
To add to all of this, it is also extremely fast at taking your temperature. Most regular thermometers take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes to record an accurate temp. Some require pre-warming to make temping faster and more accurate (I know my drug store cheapie did). But Wink is lightning fast at taking temps, all while being pinpoint accurate--something that is absolutely crucial for practicing fertility awareness. On average, my Wink records my temp in about 15-20 seconds. It may seem like a small change, but when you're laying in bed with a thermometer in your mouth before you can start the rest of your day, those few seconds can matter. Especially, in my case, if you're lying in bed listening to a crying baby who has to wait until mama's done temping. 😁
Wink is also rechargeable, so you don't have to worry about replacing a dying thermometer mid-cycle and marking the rest of your temps as questionable. Kindara will alert you when Wink's battery is low, it charges fully in 1-2 hours, and then it should be good to go for another few months.
The biggest, most incredible advantage that Wink has over any of the other thermometers, though, is its ability to sync with Kindara's app directly. This. Is. Amazing. It automatically records the time your temp was taken as well as the reading, without you having to lift a finger. I cannot tell you how many times I've temped and forgot to enter it--sometimes for days. Then, it's a matter of trying to remember what my BBT was from three days ago...and usually I'm not very successful. This is my favorite feature of Wink and the focal point of the whole thermometer. It uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect directly to Kindara. It can store temperatures on the thermometer until the next time it syncs, so if you're not in range of your phone, it'll sync the next time they're in range. Needless to say, it's an amazing thermometer with some awesome features for die-hard FAM'ers.
If I'm being nit picky, there are a few things about Wink's design that I would change. Overall, though, it looks and feels beautiful in the hand. It's smaller than it looks (in a good way), and has a soft, velvety feel to its black matte finish. The LED display gives you a cute "winking" animation when you separate the lid from the base, and its eyes close when you connect it back together.
Here are my few design complaints, none of which affect the performance of the thermometer and all of which may be just personal preference. First, I wish the vibration was a little bit softer. I usually clamp my thermometer between my teeth, but I found myself holding it between my lips because otherwise it'd make my teeth chatter when my temp was done. Second, I also was slightly disappointed to see that popping it in/out of the base made significantly more noise than I would've liked--the thermometer itself is silent, but getting it in or out of the base may not be. I have a feeling my husband may be bothered by it, but only time will tell. It's also harder than I thought to remove it from the base (you can do it one-handed easily, but it definitely requires dexterity). For those of us who are groggy in the morning, this might be a little more challenging. Still, not impossible, and you quickly learn the trick to popping it open easily. The last thing I didn't like was the "top-heavy" feel of the thermometer in my mouth. This wasn't too much of an issue when I was lying on my back, but if I was sitting upright or on my side, it took a little more effort to keep Wink in the right spot. Again, something you'd get used to if you used Wink on a daily basis, but I hope they address the balance and weight distribution in the next version of Wink.
If you use Wink like your old thermometer, you’re going to be in for a shock and probably think that it’s broken or inaccurate. I found this out during the beta testing phase as I struggled to get Wink’s temps close to what my old thermometer’s were. Like a lot of FAM users, I prewarmed my old thermometer for a few seconds before starting the reading so I could get a more accurate temp. Do NOT do that with Wink! From Will, co-founder of Kindara: “[Prewarming] is not how Wink is intended to be used and does throw off Wink's algorithm, which is calibrated assuming Wink starts at room temperature. By pre-warming, Wink's temperature sensor starts at a higher initial temperature and therefore may give erratic results. We designed Wink to ‘just work’, so for the best results just grab Wink off your bedside table and take your temperature. This ensures Wink's probe and sensor start at the same temperature each day which should produce more consistent results.” TL;DR: Wink’s algorithm means that prewarming messes with your temps. For best results, use it straight out of the case in the morning.
Next important thing when using Wink: do not take multiple temps in a row without allowing Wink to return to room temperature! This is another thing I did constantly with my old BBT that really does not translate with Wink. Normal thermometers are fine doing back-to-back temps, but again, because of Wink’s room-temp algorithm this is a big no-no. From Will again: “When taking multiple temperatures in a row, Wink's probe and temperature sensor are pre-warmed by your mouth. For example, for the first temperature, the sensor is at room temperature (~72 F), and for the second and subsequent temperatures, the sensor is at mouth temperature (~97-98F). We designed Wink to be most accurate for the first temperature of the day when Wink is at room temperature, so multiple temperatures shouldn't be necessary.”
If you really do want to temp again, make sure to wait a minute to let Wink readjust to room temperature. These two things (no prewarming and no double temping) will give you the most accurate results possible with Wink.
